This film will be a compelling, cinematic, and honest portrait of the Occupy Wall Street movement, told from many perspectives, but unified and woven into a single, resonant portrait with a collaborative ethos that mirrors the movement itself.  

The Occupy Wall Street movement began modestly with a small occupation of Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan.  But it soon became clear that the poignant themes of economic inequality and injustice in American society that had been bubbling under the surface for many years – if not decades – had come to a fore and found a powerful outlet.  Now the issues and themes of Occupy are thoroughly ingrained in the zeitgeist and will be key to the 2012 presidential election.

This film is 100% independent.  While media is an important aspect to the movement itself we feel there is an important role for a feature collaborative documentary that takes a step back to look at how and why Occupy Wall Street erupted in the fall/winter of 2011 and how it has deeply changed the debates in the United States.

Founded by filmmakers Audrey Ewell and Aaron Aites just weeks after the first encampment in Zuccotti Park, New York City, 99% - The Occupy Wall Street Collaborative Film now involves scores of filmmakers, editors, producers and many with other important skills from around the country.  We were deep in the democratic processes of Zucotti Park when it was in full swing; we were there when tear gas canisters rained down in Oakland.  We were there during the evictions in LA and NYC; we were there as thousands marched.  We have talked to organizers, economists, veterans and followed individual stories throughout the tumultuous and important first months of this historic movement.

99% - The Occupy Wall Street Collaborative Film will strive to capture the big picture of a movement that is one of the most important in generations and create a film that can reach across America and beyond.

On Oct 1, 2011 a few award-winning filmmakers in NY teamed up to make a collaborative film about the Occupy Wall Street Movement.  They called and wrote to their filmmaker friends, and they to theirs.  Soon, there were over 60 people across the country who had come together to join the collaborative film.

It started with a few filmmakers in NY, but within a couple weeks people were joining in Denver, Portland, LA, Boston, Seattle, Philly, DC, Kansas City, Miami, Pittsburgh, Austin, Dallas, Rhode Island, Nashville, Chicago, San Francisco, Oakland, in short: it took off all over the country.  Skilled editors got onboard, PR people, producers, post production supervisors, a supervising editor signed on, post production services were donated by Metropolis Post, Duotone contributed library music, and everyone started pitching in what they could. As more and more people joined the project, people started helping each other with their shoots, with equipment and contacts.  This film had taken off; the experimental process was working!
