Dec. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- Hat hair! What an amazing term which so purely defines something that everyone can understand. But... Don't freeze your head this winter just to avoid hat hair, instead follow a few of the simple tips below and enjoy a warm head without flat or wrinkled hair.

First and maybe most importantly, do not put your hat on with wet hair. The one thing that is sure to guarantee hat hair is to warm up your hair under your hat whilst your hair is still wet. Make sure you’re hair is dry, all the way to the roots. This is a good opportunity to introduce volume into your hair before putting your hat on.

Next you need to remove any static built up in your hat. There are several ways to do this, the most effective is to use one of the any static sheets that are put into tumble driers. Take the anti static sheet and wipe around the inside of your hat. If you don’t have an anti static sheet then there’s a couple of alternatives. 1. Lightly spray your hair and the inside of your hat with hairspray. But don’t overdo it, too much spray can cause your hair to be difficult when you remove your hat. 2. Use a very small amount of hand cream or moisturiser and wipe very lightly around the inside of your hat. This should be so fine that your hardly feel like your putting any cream on. The cream will stop the transfer of the static.

Before slipping your hat on you need to think how you want your hair styled when you remove your hat. If you have short hair you should style your hair as you are going to want it when you remove your hat. When you put your hat on start at the front with the hat against the front of your head pulling the hat wide around your hair and carefully down over the back.

If you have longer hair you need to think about the styling and how much time you have when you arrive. Your hat will trap heat above the hair and your hair will slowly flatten. So, firstly if you want your hair free and floaty when you remove your hat you will want to try and lock in as much volume as possible before putting on your hat. With long hair twist your hair into a loose bun high on your head and fix it in place with a material covered hair band. Then slip your hat on. Once you arrive and remove your hat shake out the loose bun and then, with warm hands, run your fingers through your hair with your head upside down to add back in volume and restyle your hair as needed.

If you would prefer to wear your long hair down, then you can either plat or braid your hair loosely then fit your hat over your hair, ideally your hat should not be tight else you’ll add a crease to your hair when the hat is removed. Or if you do not have the time to plat your hair; split your hair in a centre parting and push your hair behind your ears. Then put your hat on from the front of your head using the hat to hold your hair to either side. When removing your hat lean your head forwards and upside down and run your fingers, with warm hands, through your hair to add back volume and styling.

When you are combing through your hair with your hands to restyle trying adding a small amount of warm water if you have warn your hat for longer than two hours. The water will help revitalise your hair and add back volume. Another trick we’ve seen is using a hand dryer with a rotating nozzle and directing this at your hair to blow some life back into your style.

Your selection of hat, especially if it’s a beanie or peru can make a big difference to how much hat hair you have. Oversized beanies or the larger peru hats with some room in the top will help reduce the hat hair and still keep you very warm.
