It seems like only yesterday when Chicago was buried by a blizzard that came close to 1967's record.

Dec. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Just when some Chicago residents thought winter was coming to an end, a snow storm not seen since 1967 hits Chicago and surrounding communities. In fact, this storm was over 2,000 miles long, and over 100 million people felt the effects. Airports shut down, power outages, major highways shutdown, and ice related disasters everywhere. This was February 2, 2011.

One place hit hard was Lake Shore Drive where cars were left buried until help could arrive. Some people were stranded in their cars risking freezing to death or falling asleep from carbon monoxide poisoning. Across the 2,000 mile stretch, many homes and business were damaged by ice related disasters. Trees collapsed under the excess weight of ice accumulations, and some roofs caved in.

This year several predictions are already coming in. Indiana's National Weather Service is predicting severe winter weather for 2012. Accuweather is pointing the finger at La Nina and predicts Chicago will get the brunt of the winter season. In 2010-11 season, Chicago had 57" but 2011-12 will still be high at 52" according to Accuweather.

Flood Specialists, Inc. remembers the blizzard very well. They helped many homeowners with roof damage caused by fallen trees as well as water damage after the snow melted. "If we get snow like that again, we'll be busier than usual once again. People just don't prepare their homes - not so much for the snow - but for when the snow melts.," says Mario Majewski, disaster restoration expert for Flood Specialists, Inc.

Mario went on to say, "Homeowners should make sure their storm windows and roof are in good condition prior to winter weather. Most people think they'll last one more year and end up paying a lot more after the damage is done."  The Flood Specialists, Inc. website at http://water-damage-specialists.com includes helpful tips for when you already have a disaster as well as tips to prevent losses.
