Dec. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- NGS Leaders, an online community for next generation sequencing pioneers, is hosting a free webinar entitled De Novo Assembly of Complex Plant and Animal Genomes.  The webinar  will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. EST/8:00 a.m. PST.  Join NGS Leaders at http://www.ngsleaders.org to register for the event.

Kevin Davies, Ph.D., author of The $1,000 Genome and Editor-in-Chief of Bio-IT World, will moderate a panel discussion of industry experts on the challenges of next-generation sequencing data in de novo genome assembly in complex plant and animal genomes. The panel discussion will consider the following topics:

- Differences between de novo and reference-guided assembly
- Application of de novo assembly on human genomes
- Value of assembling a genome versus aligning reads
- Cost to sequence and assemble a genome
- Use of reduced representation methods to limit repetitive sequences
- Sequencing and assembly of transcriptomes
