Emerson Network Power ‘Cools The Cloud’ With Liebert PCW

Intelligent cooling solution offers dynamic heat load management, and aerodynamic design

Dec. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Southampton, UK - December 6, 2011 – Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson  and a global leader in maximising the availability, capacity and efficiency of critical infrastructure, today announced the Liebert® PCW cooling system, an advanced chilled water floor mount unit for precision cooling of the data centre. The Liebert PCW, available now in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, addresses the growing cost of cooling servers due to virtualisation or cloud computing. Offering the most advanced features and performance in the market, Liebert PCW enables IT managers to more efficiently respond to changes in density, speed of heat load transfer, capacity and availability needs in the data centre

“Driven by the confluence of rising energy prices, the immense scaling of cloud workloads, and continual pressures on IT budgets -- power and cooling have become even more critical issues than they were several years ago,” according to the September 2011 Forrester Research Inc. Report: “Updated Q3 2011: Power And Cooling Heat Up The Data Center”.

Setting it apart from current solutions, the Liebert PCW cooling system features an exclusive inner aerodynamic design that allows businesses to reduce data centre operational costs up to 70 percent. This is made possible through a combination of meticulous redesign of the interior of the unit to promote better air flow and advanced technology. In developing the Liebert PCW, Emerson Network Power has combined a next-generation EC Fan, state of the art Liebert iCOM control system, high efficiency filters and an ultrasonic humidifier while ensuring simple installation and flexibility in configuration.

“The increase in stored data levels worldwide puts new and never-before-seen demands on cooling systems, exposing shortcomings of existing approaches and creating demand for better designed data centres. When physical resources are leveraged to provide on-demand, at-scale access as part of a virtualised network architecture, the degree of variation and rate of change of computing load can be devastating if the system is not set up to withstand it, Liebert PCW has been designed to cool the servers offering the lowest possible power,” said, Stefano Mozzato, marketing director EMEA, Emerson Network Power.

Designed for both medium and large data centres, while also appropriate for small data centres and computer rooms, the Liebert PCW cooling system can be applied to a perimetric cooling configuration in module from 30kW to 230kW and above. The Liebert PCW maintains maximum availability and optimum energy efficiency while monitoring and dynamically responding to the needs of the data server at any given time

Cutting Edge Integrated Aerodynamics
A stand-out feature of the Liebert PCW cooling system is its redesigned chassis. Engineers at Emerson Network Power studied air flow within the floor mount unit and completely redesigned the internal components of Liebert PCW, from the coil angle to the electrical panel design - optimised inner aerodynamics is a key differentiator, thereby reducing airflow resistance and promoting maximum efficiency. Thanks to the new aerodynamic design, Liebert PCW is able to cut down the running costs of the cooling system with less energy. In addition, the specially designed EC Fan 2.0 and new automotive high efficiency filters reduce the noise level. The leading edge technology at the heart of the Liebert PCW has seven pending patents for efficiency, performance and reduced operational costs.

Intelligent Cooling with Simplified Installation
Liebert PCW comes as part of the SmartAisle™ cooling solution and offers an intelligent answer to keeping critical data systems in operation while minimising costs. Key components of the solution include a selection of water connections and modifications for easy handling, alignment, installation and maintenance. It also features adjustable legs and power cables with quick connectors. Designed for simplified installation and easy maintenance, Liebert PCW is available in three different configurations for a flexible set-up. The Liebert iCOM is a smart mode control algorithm developed for the Smart Aisle application (cold aisle containment) in order to manage temperature and enable exactly the right cooling and airflow to the servers without wasting a single Watt when moving or cooling the air control unit.

Supported by a global network spread over 150 countries, and backed by local service and support from more than 2,000 certified professionals Emerson Network Power provides systems and integrated business continuity solutions to customers wherever they are located.
