Dec. 4, 2011 - PRLog -- WOOLWICH, MAINE: Dressed as pirates wearing Santa hats, NEMT's Richmond contingent participated on Dec. 3 in the Arthritis Foundation's 2011 Jingle Bell Walk in Richmond, Va.

This is NEMT's third year participating in the Richmond walk. The Arthritis Foundation holds similar events all over the country on the first weekend in December to raise funds and awareness for arthritis research.

As of Dec. 3, the Richmond event had raised more than $30,000.

NEMT President Linda Allard led the team, joined by IT Magician Andrew Clarke, Communications Director Tara Courtland and Research Assistant Jake Adkins. The NEMT staff was also joined by family members and friends – all dressed as pirates in Santa hats.

“Arthritis is an issue that is near to our hearts,” said Allard. “Many people don't know that arthritis doesn't only strike the elderly; it also attacks children and young adults, leaving them in poor overall health, as well as severe and chronic pain.”

Two days earlier, Allard had been one of the featured speakers at the Arthritis Foundation's Commitment to a Cure Fundraiser in Richmond. She spoke about her own family's journey after her son was diagnosed with the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome type of arthritis as a small child and her husband recently survived a severe attack of septic arthritis in August.

“One in every five Americans – almost 50 million people – has been diagnosed with arthritis,” Allard said. “We often assume arthritis is a normal part of aging but nearly 300,000 of those cases are in children. This is a tremendous health issue, both personally for the people who suffer constant pain, and for the economy; arthritis costs Americans $128 billion each year in treatment and lost wages.”

As one of the nation's leading healthcare information companies, NEMT is committed to helping the fight against arthritis and other diseases that affect the health of the global population.
