Dec. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- You may be thinking of buying your Yorkie a new bed, and among the styles available today is the "doughnut" shaped bed, which happens to be a popular one. Doughnut dog beds are called that because they are usually more or less round like a doughnut and have a hollowed out center where the dogs sleeps on the cushioned nest in the middle. The raised sides allow your dog to nestle inside the comfortable bedding and lean against the bed's soft inner walls if he wants.

The sides can also block the wind and other elements if the bed is stationed in an open-air space, and can give the dog a better sense of feeling protected. Doughnut beds are among the most comfortable for dogs because of the padding that surrounds them as they sleep.

But how do you know if your dog will take to this style of bed, and if it is one that he will feel happiest sleeping in? Doughnut beds come in a variety of colors and sizes, which offers the pet owner many options when choosing dog beds. But whether or not a doughnut bed is a good match for your dog depends a lot on the dog's personality.

You can figure out a lot about the likelihood of whether or not your dog will take to a doughnut bed simply by watching the dog sleep. Does he curl up into a tight ball when sleeping, or is he more apt to stretch out on the sofa? Does he rest his head on a sofa pillow or against the back rest? If your dog tends to curl up when he sleeps, a doughnut bed just might be the best fit and the one he'll feel most comfortable in. If your dog prefers to stretch out at night, chances are he'll feel more comfortable in a long rectangular-shaped bed.

If your dog often buries himself under blankets and pillows when he sleeps, he might be more comfortable in a buttercup design bed, because that design will allow him to bury himself under the beds soft padding, just as he would with your bedding implements.

You'll want to choose a bed that is not too high for your dog to hop up onto, especially if yours is an older dog that doesn't have the mobility of a puppy. If your pet has mobility problems due to injury or age, you want to be especially careful to choose a bed that is easy for him to access so as not to exacerbate any injuries or arthritic joints.

Taking these factors into consideration will help guide you in making the correct choice when you are looking at dog beds for your pet. Visit for more on dog beds and for more on Yorkies!
