Hydroxy acids are synthetic versions of the acids commonly found in sugary fruits. They act as exfoliants, removing the older layers of dead cells from the surface of the skin. This exposes the younger, smoother skin. Using hydroxy acids leaves behind young skin that is sensitive to the sun, so sunscreen should be worn following use.

Coenzyme 10 in a nutrient that works to regulate the production of energy in cells. It may be able to prevent fine wrinkles from forming around the eyes, and it could also help to prevent sun damage.

Antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, and Alpha Lipoic Acid may be used in wrinkle creams. Antioxidants in these creams may be able to prevent the damage caused by free radicals, and therefore to protect the skin from the signs of ageing.

Tea extracts have antioxidant properties and they can also prevent inflammation. They are sometimes used in wrinkle creams because of these properties.

Retinol or vitamin A is a form of antioxidant that is used in many wrinkle creams. A related molecule, tretinoin has been approved by the FDA for use in prescription wrinkle creams. Creams containing vitamin A and its derivatives are not suitable for use during pregnancy.

Copper peptides can promote the healing process. They can also stimulate the production of collagen, an important connective tissue that keeps the skin supple and firm. Copper peptides may also help to enhance the protective powers of antioxidants.

Collagen and elastin are both part of the connective tissue that supports the skin. Their production decreases with age, resulting in wrinkles. Both of these molecules are too large to penetrate the skin, but some creams contain derivatives of them that are small enough to be absorbed, or ingredients that are believed to stimulate their production by the body.

Kinetin is growth factor found in plants. It may help to improve the pigmentation of skin and to reduce wrinkles, although it is as yet unclear how it works.

Sun protection plays an important role in preventing wrinkles. Wearing a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, and which protects against both UVA and UVB radiation is one of the most effective ways of preventing wrinkles.

Moisturizers can help to keep the skin soft and supple. This can prevent the formation of wrinkles to a certain extent. Many anti-ageing creams rely simply on their moisturizing ingredients for their effect, which means they will be no more effective than a cheap moisturizer. Creams that contain active ingredients such as retinol may be more effective against wrinkles.
