Time + the human condition = artist; Eva Caridi’s ‘Nude’ exhibition

Eva Caridi is an award winning artist that is proudly hosting, for the first time in the UK, her ‘Nude’ exhibition from January 12 – 22, 2012 at the 14,000 square foot, triple height subterranean space in central London; Ambika P3.  ‘Nude’ consists of site-specific, multimedia, interactive iron labyrinths that unwind over a floor surface of around 14,000 square foot which visitors can experience by walking through the tortuous metallic corridors.

The exhibition is composed of two labyrinths; one is built in a Cretan fashion which has a video installation that merges past, present and future by showing the three stages of life through Caridi’s family (herself, her mother and her young niece).  The second is a deconstructed space where an army of life-sized, plaster sculptures of the female form are frozen in various moments in time trying to capture life as it slips from their hands.

Eva Caridi comments: “Nude is a fragile condition of human existence; I choose this title to try to embody the essence of my inspiration; being human, time and introspection.  The labyrinth’s force you into a pilgrimage, a journey through time ascending towards a personal state of mind.  Innocence can be lost if you cannot get to the point where you can understand yourself and surrender to that state of mind. As people we complicate things and ignore the simple meaning of our existence.  There are many messages you can get from this exhibition; I am merely the architect helping people reach whatever conclusion they want about themselves.”

In the region of 11 tons of steel is being used to construct the labyrinths and will take nearly 1000 man hours to fabricate each piece.  When this is complete, the segments will be transported to Ambika P3, taking five days to install.  ‘Nude’ has been a long journey involving years of study and research.  It is an intricately constructed, thought-provoking exhibition that engages users to look at themselves in the stark light of reality.

‘Nude’ runs from Thursday, January 12 – 22, 2012 at Ambika P3; a former construction hall / underground hangar for the University of Westminster’s School of Engineering.  It’s a free entry exhibition open to the general public with an ‘invite-only’ preview evening taking place on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 from 6pm – 9pm.
