Nov. 29, 2011 - PRLog -- Queen Mary, University of London was among some 40 hospitals, educational centres and local councils to be presented a Good Farm Animal Welfare Award on Monday 28th November 2011. The award was presented by Compassion in World Farming for Queen Mary’s efforts to help improve the welfare of millions of farm animals.

The awards, in three categories – Good Egg, Good Chicken and Good Dairy - recognise commitment to improving the lives of animals by sourcing only higher welfare eggs, chicken or dairy produce for their catering. Queen Mary, University of London won a Good Egg award.

Jenny Jones, Green Assembly Member and former chair of London Food addressed the audience, and spoke passionately about her bid to improve the food we eat as a nation. TV chef, Allegra McEvedy helped present the awards.

Emma Baker, Food Services Manager in Events & Hospitality QM (the hospitality brand of Queen Mary) said ‘We are delighted to have received this award, it reflects our continued investment in food sourcing to meet the demand for transparency from our customers. Events & Hospitality QM is committed to minimising the impact of its operations on the environment through it’s sustainable food policy, this award provides recognition for these endeavours.’
The inaugural Public Procurement Awards form part of a suite of Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards that have been presented to the food industry across Europe since 2007. Over 265 million hens, chickens, pigs and dairy cows and calves are set to benefit each year as a result of winners’ policies.

Launched in 2007, Compassion in World Farming’s Food Business Team has pioneered a unique partnership approach – working with the European food industry to encourage and reward commitment, transparency, performance and innovation in the field of animal welfare.

Katy Read, Head of Food Business at Compassion in World Farming said: “It is so great to see the public sector’s catering departments taking animal welfare into consideration when sourcing their meat and egg produce. Higher welfare produce isn’t just the responsibility of the large corporations, but something that can be achieved at all levels. Well done to all our award winners – keep up the good work!”
