Season of Art - Palm Beach - Begins January 2012

Palm Beach proves a destination for contemporary art collectors, showcasing an impressive lineup of museum exhibition openings coinciding with the 15th Anniversary of ArtPalmBeach – January 19-23

Nov. 28, 2011 - PRLog -- Palm Beach, FL - November 16, 2011 – Now recognized internationally as a destination for art, Palm Beach’s cultural landscape is flourishing. The area is home to major cultural institutions such as the Norton Museum of Art, Boca Raton Museum of Art, Society of the Four Arts, Flagler Museum, the Armory Art Center, the Palm Beach Photographic Center - as well as a plethora of additional art institutions and galleries. Palm Beach’s premier contemporary art fair - ArtPalmBeach – celebrating its 15th Anniversary at the Palm Beach County Convention Center January 19-23 - has been an influential force in the South Florida art scene since its debut in 1997. Since that time Palm Beach has seen an explosion of culture and January’s schedule of exhibition openings surrounding the Anniversary of the Fair will provide a feast of cultivation enough to satisfy the most discerning of collectors.
The Norton Museum of Art will unveil “Beth Lipman: A Still Life Installation” on Jan. 18, 2012 to be on exhibit through May 27, 2012. The installation is a specially commissioned work said to be inspired by the Museum’s collection of Old Master still life paintings. “Lipman re-interprets the historical preoccupations with death and decay, over-consumption, and the sumptuousness of life as represented in 17th and 18th century European still-life paintings,” according to the Norton Museum’s website. To coincide with the installation, the Museum will showcase a selection of studio glass from the Museum Collection including works by internationally recognized artists Dale Chihuly, William Morris, and Toots Zynsky will be featured with other outstanding examples of contemporary studio glass.
The Beth Lipman installation will be accompanied by a 10-week visit from the Corning Museum of Glass Hot Glass Roadshow. The Roadshow is the world’s premiere mobile glassblowing unit, a mobile “hot shop” housed in a 28-foot-long trailer. The Roadshow will operate on the Museum campus six days a week and will include live demonstrations, hands-on-workshops, and glassblowing performances, two of which will be presented by ArtPalmBeach exhibiting artist. For more information on Museum hours and exhibitions, please visit the Museum’s website at www.norton.org.
The Boca Museum of Art will premiere “MARTIN SCHOELLER: Closeup” January 18 - March 18, 2012. New York-based photographer Schoeller worked as an assistant for Annie Leibovitz in the 1990s and later went on to gain recognition as a features photographer for the New Yorker. Scholler is known for his “de-famed” portraits of Hollywood stars such as Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, politicians such as Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, sports icons Kobe Bryant and Andre Agassi, pop-idols such as Chris Rock and even it-girl Paris Hilton. This exhibition presents 48 arresting large-format color images – many of which are Schoeller’s most famous celebrity portraits. The images challenge the viewer to question topics such as self-representation, celebrity, photographic honesty, as well as the impressive explanatory power of portrait photography.
