It has only been a few days and the number of hits showing on a major video sharing site is over 4 million and is poised to go more. Even Bollywood stars such as Amitabh Bachchan, Karan Johar and others have liked the song and have tweeted about it.

The song “why this kolaveri di” is from the Tamil movie called “Three” which is to be released in 2012. The first video released is nothing more than the actor and also the singer of the song Dhanush sat there and recoding or practicing the song with others giving hints as to how the song must be sung. The music video features actor Dhanush, his wife Aishwarya Rajinikanth, composer Anirudh and Tamil and director Shruti Hassan. The makers claim that the music was composed in about 20 minutes. The composer of the song is 18 year old Anirudh finds it difficult to understand why the song has become a major hit. Perhaps it is clever marketing technique and strategy of Sony Music Entertainment (India) that has caused a sensation. Whatever the cause maybe, there is no doubt that youngsters like the song.

Although the song has been sung in English there are a few words that are in Tamil. However, when one listens to this song they will realise that the song is not easy to understand. This is because there is a strong Tamil accent given to the music, a phenomenon called “Tanglish” meaning a fusion of Tamil and English.

The few Tamil words such as “Kolaveri” here means “murderous rage”. The exact meaning of the Tamil word "Kolaveri" is the urge to kill someone or a deep anger/desire to kill someone. But in slang terms, the word is directed towards someone who did something bad. Although the lyrics of the song are “nonsense” taking into account that it was not written to be a great musical of any kind but worded as a sort of filler for an event in the movie. Little did the makers of the movie know that the video will be a major hit? The words are so absurd that it almost makes no sense what so ever. The song or the lyrics makes no sense at all. Despite all this, the song has been liked by not only Tamils but people across India. The song has also been aired on several radio stations across India even in states like Bihar.
