Sex Funnier Than Politics Says Humor Emag
A survey has found that readers of a comedy emag prefer humor about sex to jokes about politics, work, sports or any other subject.
Nov. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- One of the first things the publishers of emag, Amock, did when they launched four months ago was to put a survey on their website asking what their readers actually wanted to read about and what amused them. The result, that they liked humor about sex and relationships was overwhelming, but didn’t surprise publisher, Gurmeet Mattu.
“As a downloadable pdf we’re an internet publication and the internet is global,” he said. “That means that our humor has to hurdle a lot of cross-cultural barriers and the one thing that links all mankind is sex. Work practices, sports, education may vary but love and sex are universal.”
Amock is a mix of regular features such as a spoof horoscope page and a parody of a problem page along with spoof news stories and it is within this second section that Mattu was hoping to establish what his writers should concentrate on. Stories such as Woman To Have Alien Baby and Actress To Sell Bathwater For Charity have outshone Taj Mahal To Become Call Centre and Hitler’s Moustache Found.
“We don’t set out to offend anybody,” added Mattu, “We set out to offend everybody,” though his tongue may have been firmly lodged in his cheek. Himself an award-winning comedy writer he added, “I’d like to think we were bawdy rather than deliberately crude. A little bit of outrageousness and irreverence is the basis of most comedy and our survey proves that our readers get the biggest belly laugh when we’re mocking the improbabilities of sexual matters. It may not appeal to all but that’s the way of the world.”
Mattu was at pains to point out that the survey results would not encourage him to push the envelope with regards to decency and that the content of his emag would remain at the current levels of respectability. “Amock isn’t about shocking its readers, its about making them laugh.”
