Nov. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- Southwest Florida’s premier community orchestra, the Gulf Coast Symphony, comes to BIG ARTS Saturday, December 4, for a special Classical Access concert that includes the works of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. The concert will feature Tristan Teo, the 14-year-old winner of this year’s Virginia Waring International Piano Competition. Tickets are $25 General, $10 Student, and Child 17 & under free. Concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in BIG ARTS Schein Performance Hall, 900 Dunlop Road, Sanibel.

The first part of each Access Concert program offers a complete immersion into the selected work, examining it from multiple perspectives with Music Director Andrew Kurtz. Explore the work’s context in world history and cultural movements. Find out how it fits into the composer’s body of works, and how the details of the composer’s life influenced its creation. Learn the stories found “inside” the music.  Under the direction of Dr. Andrew Kurtz, audiences will be treated to performances of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1 in G minor, “Winter Dreams” and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Opus 37, featuring Tristan Teo.

A native of Canada, Teo has been awarded top prizes in several international piano competitions. At the age of 11, he placed first in both the Solo and Concerto Pre-college Divisions of the 2009 Kingsville International Isabel Scionti Piano Competitions, becoming the youngest contestant ever to achieve this honor. Earlier this year, he was awarded first prize at the 5th Bösendorfer and Schimmel USASU International Piano Junior Competition. In April, Teo garnered first prize wins in both the Solo and Concerto Competitions of the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition in California. In his spare time, Teo enjoys reading and creating LEGO masterpieces.
Concert sponsored in part by Drs. Peter and Eleanor Blitzer and Gulf Coast Symphony’s Musical Legacy Society.
