Still life art is where she starts every new idea, and often her best artistic ideas come to her while drawing still life setups in her studio. Joe Gyurcsak, as an accomplished contemporary art painting instructor, uses still life oil painting as a way of brushing up on the essential methods he needs as a practicing artist. Gyurcsak is committed to keeping still life painting a part of his artistic practice and shares what has worked for him throughout his 15-year art teaching career.
Dinhofer and Gyurcsak provide still life painting tips on:
- Choosing objects for still lifes
- How to provide a story to the objects in a still life
- Light transitions on the surfaces of still life objects
Still Life Painting Tip: Still Life artist and instructor, Joe Gyurcsak demonstrates how to paint a still life oil painting. All the oil painting techniques a painter uses when painting the figure or a landscape are utilized in still life painting too
"I find that fixing the viewfinder to a stationary object is very valuable." - Joe Gyurcsak
Still Life Art Tip:
Still life artist, Lisa Dinhofer believes drawing daily keeps her skills sharp and provides opportunity to explore new ideas. She never starts a still life painting without first making drawings.
"Many of the drawings may never become paintings, but I draw because I love it. If the paintings are novels, the drawings are essays, poems—sometimes they're just thoughts." - Lisa Dinhofer
Still Life Oil Painting Tip:
Combining inanimate objects with animate objects on the same scale can provide a way for people to relate instantly to the painting. Dinhofer chooses objects for her still lifes—marbles, toys, masks, insects.
Dinhofer explains that for her still life art with multiple objects, she simply puts the items together and adjusts them to see if a story emerges, even if she's not sure what the story is.
