Follow on Google News | Taking Action To Keep Teacher Morale HighSchool Supply Gift Program continues to award teachers for the contribution they make despite difficult budget and social challenges.
By: Jake Lee In an attempt to counter this problem and make teachers aware of the community's support the Christensen Law Firm School Supplies Gift Program was created to give back to teachers. The program, sponsored by the Utah based Christensen Law Firm, PLLC, is pleased to announce that Mrs. Desiree Barlow, a 6th grade teacher at Windridge Elementary School in Kaysville, UT, is this week’s recipient of the Golden Apple Award. Mrs. Desiree Barlow loves teaching, though it was not her first profession. She originally graduated with a business degree but after volunteering at her local elementary school, fell in love with it and decided to go back to school to get a degree in teaching. “It’s not a job for me; it’s a hobby! And I love it.” She said. She especially loves history and has learned about many distinct cultures and ancient civilizations through her travels to many parts of the world. She says that she enjoys being able to bring history to life for the children and strives to incorporate them through hands-on learning. Mrs. Barlow has five children of her own and knows what it means to be a mother. She makes great sacrifices for her students by taking time out of her own busy day to help them have a more valuable learning experience by running a book club and encouraging students to develop an appreciation for various types of literature through reading and discussing material together. She also spends a large portion of her salary on her class in an effort for her students to have the best educational experience possible. With the award money Mrs. Barlow plans on buying more shelves to store the various book sets for her class, some which she has purchased with her own money, and more calculators for their algebra and geometry programs. She also would like to buy supplies to help out in their theatrical programs. With any remaining funds, she plans on purchasing more supplies for her classes’ applied learning projects. Each week the program gives the Golden Apple Award, a $100 gift card each week to a deserving Utah Public schoolteacher and his/her class. Anyone can nominate a teacher for this program, teachers, students, parents or administrators.
