Why the Church Should use Social Media

As Christians we must be in the world, but not of the world. We cannot turn a blind eye to the things that go on around us. Many times, a few chosen words or phrases can be utilized more effectively than an hour long sermon.

Nov. 16, 2011 - PRLog -- As Christians we must be in the world, but not of the world. We cannot turn a blind eye to the things that go on around us. Many times, a few chosen words or phrases can be utilized more effectively than an hour long sermon. When reading a Facebook page and seeing all the comments made it is a good thing to add in a Biblical quote, or a well-placed word of encouragement to the status or comment area. Using a line from a favorite hymn or Psalm is a beautiful way to restore balance to those who tend to go in a more sardonic and negative direction.

According to research it is said that 61% of Facebook users are 35 years of age or older. The average Facebook user is 38 years old. The research has established that 47% of all adults between the ages of 50 and 65 are on Facebook. These statistics have established that people are reaching out and communicating in a unique and different way than in the past. That even the middle aged and older are high volume consumers within the digital age.

We want our communication to be short, sweet and to the point. Wasn't Jesus the epitome of this sort of interaction in many cases? What did he say to the rich young ruler and the woman at the well? He listened using his knowledge and understanding of the human condition so that the wisdom he spoke struck right at the essence of the person and their hearts. They knew the truth when they heard it.

And it can be so with the modern way of communicating. In gentleness and compassion we can speak our Christian truth and shine a much needed light into a world consumed in darkness.
