Nov. 15, 2011 - PRLog -- Since its current relaucnh, the Chevy Camaro has reignited the muscle wars among the domestic big 3.  Canceled after model year 2002, Chevy finally brought back its everyman sports car for model year 2010.  After much hype of course.  Now in well established among the muscle car and pony car crowd, Chevy brings out the big guns with the launch of the 2012 Camaro ZL1.

Set to do battle namely with the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, the Camaro ZL1 brings it’s own ante to this party.  First is the muscle for this muscle car.  A 6.2L Supercharged V8 producing 580 hp and 556 lb-ft of torque.  This is the same motor that Chevy has seen fit in the Covrvette ZR1 and the CTS-V.

Other go fast goodies for this super muscle car are a 6-speed manual transmission with a short throw shifter, track tuned suspension with magnetic ride control,  a dual mode exhuast, aluminum hood with carbon fiber trim, 6-piston front and 4-piston rear Brembo brakes, and 20” forged aluminum wheels with high performance tires.

Inside the Camaro ZL1 differentiates itself from less Camaros too with things like upgraded seats and steering wheel with suede trim.  All the other normal luxuries from lesser Camaros make an appearance here too.  The few external tweks are unique front fascia with splitter, unique rear diffuser, side sil extensions, and a trunk lid spolier to cap it off.

Most recent news here is that Chevrolet has revealed production spec pricing and performance figures.  Chevy says that with all the go fast goodies the ZL1 will rocket to 60 in 3.9 seconds and on to a 1/4 mile time of 12.0 seconds.  Chevy claims a top speed of 184 mph for the automatic and 180 mph for the manual.  The larger and grippy 20” tires matched with the magnetic ride suspension allows the ZL1 to turn a skidpad number of a stellar 1.0g.  Keep in mind this car weighs more than 3,800 lbs.

All of this adds up to some serious performance at the track.  GM recored a pre-produciton Camaro ZL1 doing a lap of the famous Nurburgring in just 7 minutes and 41 seconds.  That is in some serious company with cars such as an Audi R8 5.2, 991 Carrera S, and Mercedes SLS AMG.  All cars costing over $100,000.

Pricing beings from $54,995 with jut a few available options.  $470 will get you bright finish 20” aluminum wheels (same design), $900 will add a moonrof, $600 adds exposed carbon fiber weave detailing for the hood vents, $470 adds some racing stripes, and $500 will get you a suede steering wheel and shift knob.  Those who HAVE to have an automatic can expect to pay $1,185 to do so, though why you ever would is beyond me.

Look for the 2012 Camaro ZL1 to hit showrooms sometime next spring.  Visit http://globaltestdriver.com for more information on this press release.
