Renewal Information for Massachusetts Counselors & MFTs
License renewal and continuing education information for Massachusetts-licensed Mental Health Counselors and MFTs.
All licensees are required, as a condition of license renewal, to complete a minimum of 30 contact hours of continuing education activities per licensure/renewal period (every two years). Please remember that only up to 50% of the required CEUs may be obtained via on-line or home study programming.
The purpose of continuing education is to assure high standards for the practice of mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, rehabilitation counseling and educational psychology by requiring licensees to participate in on-going educational activities. Through these experiences, licensees increase their competence and enhance the knowledge obtained during prior education and training.
For LMHCs, CEUs must be approved under the standards of the Massachusetts Mental Health Counselors Association (MAMHCA):
MAMHCA's CE division is called the Massachusetts Mental Health Continuing Education Program (MMCEP)
Phone: (508) 698-0010
For LMFTs, CEUs must be approved under the standards of the Massachusetts Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (MAMFT), the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), and/or their appointed Continuing Education administrators approved by this Board.
Currently FDA/ CE certifications are the appointed CE administrator.
