The local business community is one of diverse industries and business sectors. An area in which there are many companies looking for skilled people with a variety of abilities to work in different business sectors and industries, an area with many hundreds of local people actively seeking employment.

However many employers are finding it difficult to identify and engage the skilled and talented employees they need and many companies are missing out on the talent and skills they need and are struggling to deliver the services and products their customers want.

Management of the local workforce is a key element in business community development. Yet many employers lack the resources to fully manage their recruitment as staff are rarely trained in recruiting and interviewing. For too long companies have been simply accepting the service levels that recruitment agencies have seen fit to provide without question. This has cost local employers time, resources and money. Employers need to reclaim the responsibility for their recruitment if they want to see improvements in costs, efficiency and results.

Earlier this year the British Chamber of Commerce surveyed over 500 small and medium-sized businesses and identified recruitment as one of the biggest challenges for employers, with the time and cost flagged as main concerns.

Just over half used agencies occasionally, 46 per cent said they would never use an agency and 66 per cent cited high costs as a reason for not using agencies.

Over 40 per cent of respondents estimated the cost of recruiting a new employee to be more than £2000.

However, according to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. The cost of recruiting a new employee, depending on the role you wish to fill, can range from anywhere between £4,500 to £10,000 for a senior manager.

A company’s biggest asset is its workforce and the proper management of the recruitment of this asset are key to the growth and development of any business community.

By ensuring they have the skills, confidence, abilities and resources needed to manage their recruitment effectively and efficiently, employers will be able to make better use of the people within their local business area, which in turn, will lead to a stronger and more prosperous local business community.
