The Inverness Hotel, King Soopers & The Salvation Army Serve Thanksgiving Dinner in Denver

More than 1,300 people were served in 2010 and it’s estimated that number will climb by 20 percent this year
Nov. 14, 2011 - PRLog -- As you walk the grocery aisles at King Soopers, there are constant reminders that Thanksgiving is near. For some, this annual tradition will include a meal prepared for four, eight or slightly more, but for some local organizations, this meal includes preparations for nearly 1,500. The annual Salvation Army Thanksgiving Dinner, Denver’s largest charitable Thanksgiving feast, will take place at the Colorado Convention Center in Hall B on Thurs., Nov. 24 from 11:30-1:30pm. The Salvation Army has hosted this dinner for more than 100 years, and King Soopers and The Inverness Hotel have been lead supporters for more than 11 years. King Soopers has generously donated all of the ingredients that Executive Chef Rodney Herwerth and his team have volunteered to prepare at the hotel. Additionally, gloves and hats will be available at the dinner event on a first-come, first-serve basis for attendees interested in warm winter apparel.

The three-day preparation and cooking marathon, spearheaded by Chef Herwerth, will consist of multiple hotel chefs and kitchen staff volunteering 24 hours to prepare and cook a meal fitting for 1,700. On Thanksgiving Day, nearly 150 volunteers will staff the Thanksgiving celebration at the Colorado Convention Center, serving dinner to anyone interested in a hot meal, DJ music and friendly conversation. The dinner is free and the community at large is invited to attend.

Unlike a typical Thanksgiving grocery list, The Salvation Army’s grocery list consists of:

-800 lbs. of turkey
-100 lbs. of potatoes
-700 pints of milk
-200 pumpkin pies
-1,000 rolls
-114 lbs. of fresh celery
-273 lbs. of cranberry sauce
-400 lbs. of apples
-360 lbs. of oranges
-500 lbs. of fresh onions
-25 cases of coffee
-5 lbs. of sage
-1,060 lbs. of green beans
-245 lbs. of stuffing
-36 lbs. of butter
-4 cases of margarine patties
-8 cases of non-dairy topping

“It has been a tough year for many families and individuals that continue to struggle to make ends meet,” said Major Neil Hogan with The Salvation Army. “If only for one day, we want to give these folks a well deserved break from their hardship and an opportunity to relax and enjoy a good meal. It is through the generosity of companies like King Soopers and The Inverness Hotel that we can make this possible.”
