AMWA Announces Gloria Steinem And Rachel Naomi Remen, MD as Keynote Speakers at 2012 Annual Meeting

The American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) announces Gloria Steinem and Rachel Naomi Remen, MD are keynote speakers at the organization’s 97th Annual Meeting April 13-15, 2012, in Miami, Florida.
 
Nov. 14, 2011 - PRLog -- The American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA), the leading organization of women physicians, medical students and other persons dedicated to serving as the unique voice for women's health and the advancement of women in medicine, today announced the program schedule for the organization’s 97th Annual Meeting in Miami, Florida will feature keynote speakers Gloria Steinem and Rachel Naomi Remen, MD.

The meeting is also the Triennial Meeting of the Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA) North America Region.

“Ms. Steinem and Dr. Remen are groundbreaking pioneers in their fields, Ms. Steinem in championing women’s rights and Dr. Remen in the mind/body holistic health movement. They will inspire AMWA and MWIA members and members of the Federation of Medical Women of Canada (FMWC) as well as other interested women physicians to continue in their own groundbreaking efforts,” said AMWA President Mary Guinan, PhD, MD, founding dean of the School of Community Health Science, University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

“The AMWA Program Committee has assembled world class experts in women’s health and women’s advancement. I am extremely proud AMWA has garnered the attention of such a diverse group of leaders,” added Dr. Guinan.  

The AMWA Program Committee is co-chaired by AMWA President-Elect Gayatri Devi, MD and AMWA Past President Eliza Chin, MD, MPH.

“I want to thank our many speakers and presenters. They are excited to speak to our group because the AMWA membership represents the leadership of many institutions and issues,” said Dr. Devi.

Dr. Chin added, “We are excited by this meeting which will feature not only outstanding speakers, but networking and mentoring opportunities for our physician, resident and student members.”

For nearly 100 years, AMWA has dedicated its resources to advancing women in medicine and improving women’s health.  During the meeting, AMWA will present the Bertha Van Hoosen Award, named in honor of the founder of AMWA, the Elizabeth Blackwell Award, the Lila A. Wallis Award, the Woman in Science Award, and the Anne C. Carter Leadership Award, which recognizes medical student leadership. Nominations are being accepted through December 16, 2011. AMWA will also recognize the first recipients of the AMWA Exceptional Mentor Awards, given to an AMWA member or non-member by an AMWA member who was assisted in her medical career.

AMWA medical student members will hold their elections as well as conduct poster sessions. Abstracts are being accepted through December 18, 2011.

Delta Air Lines is the official airline of the meeting and is sponsoring the opening night reception with keynote speaker, Dr. Remen.

AMWA is applying for continuing medical education (CME) units for this meeting from the Cleveland Clinic Florida.
