Nov. 10, 2011 - PRLog -- Vienna, VA, – Eco trailblazer Greenloons http://www.greenloons.com/ that helps families source the green vacation of their dreams is sharing Greenloons-vetted green reading suggestions for children just in time for the Holidays.

“Children of all ages can discover nature’s wonders and how to protect them. Greenloons’ reading suggestions focus on environmental issues in an informative yet empowering manner,” says Irene Lane, Greenloons’ visionary founder.  See: http://www.greenloons.com/blog/introduction-to-ecotourism/top-environmentally-focused-books-for-kids.html?day=15&month=10&year=2011

Here are Lane’s suggestions for Holiday reading and gift giving for the family:

Baby to Age 2: In The Curious Garden by Peter Brown a boy discovers a neglected garden and inspires the town’s residents to help re-create a lush, green area for all to enjoy.

Ages 3–5: The Great Kapok Tree: A Tale of the Amazon Rain Forest by Lynne Cherry is a story about a man sent into the Amazon rainforest to cut down a very large kapok tree. The heat and the sounds of the rain forest induce him to sleep. During his slumber, animals of the rainforest (snakes, birds, frogs and a jaguar) appear to him in a dream to plead their case for why the tree should not be chopped down.

Ages 6–8: The Lorax by Dr. Seuss may be a classic, but the message still rings true.  The story is told by Once-ler who one day comes upon a place filled with wondrous flora and fauna.  Upon discovering the Truffula Tree, he decides to chop them all down to produce his versatile apparel, Thneeds.  Over time the trees disappear as do all the other flora and fauna leaving Once-ler with an important lesson.

Cactus Hotel by Brenda Z. Guiberson reveals the life of a saguaro cactus in the Sonoran Desert.  The story is full of facts about this fragile ecosystem as well as wonderful illustrations.

Ages 9–12: World Without Fish by Mark Kurlansky explains what is happening to the oceans, fish and ecosystem. The author is a former fisherman who factually explains the economic, political, historical, cultural and social aspects of overfishing and how supporting sustainable fishing helps.

Heroes of the Environment: True Stories of People Who Are Helping to Protect Our Planet by Harriet Rohmer is a compilation of stories about 12 people throughout the United States (one story is from Mexico) who are helping to preserve the environment. Also included are tips on how young people can get involved in their own communities.
