Nov. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- Julie Ann Segal, President of Metropolitan Interiors in Minneapolis, comments on the art piece "Barriers Against the Reef" by artist Howard Behrens. This piece is just one among a vast collection of landscape and seascape artwork. His approach involves the use of not only formal aspects of painting with brushwork, composition and color, but also with a dynamic palette knife technique. Julie Ann thought it was beautiful and gave the artwork a sense of clarity.

Julie Ann felt that by including a person in the piece, Behrens gives it a feeling that can not be achieved without introducing a human element. Incorporating a person climbing the rocks illustrates adventure and peacefulness. It brings the viewer into the artwork and makes them visualize themselves in that moment. The waves crashing again the rocks and the smell of the ocean is brought to life. The rich colors and shadow details really makes the piece unique and realistic.

Behrens expresses shadow, light, and color. These elements convey his passion for the sun's gifts. He learned that the only way he can truly obtain what he feels in his paintings is to create them using a palette knife. A palette knife allows for boldness and control of color. Using the palette knife, Behrens can capture not only the softness of clouds, but also the strength of water as seen in the "Barriers Against the Reef" piece. To produce rich colors along with dimension and mood, he applies deep color in many layers.
