December First Friday to feature book launch and exhibit opening

Salinas, CA – The National Steinbeck Center’s December 2 First Friday event will feature the launch of Salinas-born author James B. Golden’s second book and the opening of the Mission San Antonio Padua Exhibition.

Afro Clouds and Nappy Rain, the newest book by award-winning author-poet-journalist James B. Golden introduces readers to Curtis Brown, an amalgamation of troubled young men Golden has worked with in the judicial system.

Golden views the National Steinbeck Center as “an integral part of Salinas and my development as a writer/scholar.” With the release of his newest book, the Salinas native has once again found a way to give voice to a population of young people who have remained silent for decades.

The Mission San Antonio de Padua Exhibition showcases the photography of Al Weber and runs from December 2 through March 4. The exhibition will include a portfolio of 52 magnificent photographs of Mission San Antonio de Padua; including a 10-minute video documentary of the project compiled by photographer Larry Angier.

Al Weber’s distinguished career in photography spans six decades and represents a mastery of both black-and-white and color processes. He has taught well over 10,000 students in workshops and classrooms throughout the West as an instructor for Monterey Peninsula College, the Friends of Photography, the University of California at Santa Cruz, and the celebrated Ansel Adams Workshop series in Yosemite.

The National Steinbeck Center is excited to welcome both of these artists to our monthly and free First Friday event. Doors open at 5PM and conclude at 8PM, with featured wines from local winery Ventana Vineyards.
