FanFaire Foundation Ushers in Holiday Season with Messiah Sing-Along and Play-Along Concerts

December 2 and 4 Concerts at La Jolla’s Neurosciences Institute Auditorium features Greater San Diego Community Orchestra and Soloists Competition winners with significant audience participation

Nov. 3, 2011 - PRLog -- FanFaire Foundation, a San Diego County-based nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing public appreciation of music and science, ushers in the holiday season with two “Sing-Along and Play-Along” concerts of Handel's popular oratorio "Messiah."

The concerts will be held at the acoustically superb Neurosciences Institute Auditorium in La Jolla, CA on Friday December 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday December 4 at 2:30 p.m. Both concerts feature the Greater San Diego Community Orchestra directed by Dr. Angela Yeung, the Foundation's Ambassador for Community Outreach.  The ensemble will play Mozart's orchestration of the Messiah which augmented the original instrumentation from 2 oboes, one bassoon, 2 trumpets, timpani, strings and basso continuo to pairs of flutes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, and trumpets, three trombones, timpani, and strings. The solo arias will be sung by the winners of the Soloists’ Competition, now an annual event held in November to select the soloists for the Sing-Along.

The event is a regular activity of the Foundation’s Community Outreach Program which is designed in part to bring throughout the year varieties of life-enriching musical experiences to people of all ages in San Diego County. The program also encourages significant community involvement in activities such as that exemplified by the audience participation in the “Sing-Along and Play-Along” concerts and the search for concert soloists through a competition open to all members of the community.

As attendees of last year’s inaugural concert will attest, the “Sing-Along and Play-Along” concerts are a uniquely life-enriching and fun event.  They are unlike others in that the conductor, Dr. Yeung, conducts not only the orchestra but also the audience, facing them from the stage as they stand, voluntarily grouped into the various voice types, while singing the choral parts of the “Messiah”. During the choruses, some orchestra members descend the stage and position themselves in front of the audience along with members of the community who come to the concert bearing musical instruments to play along with the orchestra as the audience sings along.  .

Audience members may bring their own score or rent one at the door for $5. Tickets, priced at $10, may be purchased online (http://fanfairefoundation.org/tickets.html) or at the door (cash only) one hour before performance.
