New Surgery for Migraine Cure Now Offered in Metro Atlanta

Nov. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Plastic Surgery of Gwinnett, PC announces they are now offering surgical treatments for migraine headaches.  Techniques initially developed at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland are now brought to the Atlanta area for the treatment of medication resistant intractable migraines.

18% of the population suffers from debilitating migraines headaches, 2/3 of them women.  Standard medical treatment fails to provide relief in a high percentage of patients.  With the discovery that cosmetic Botox® was an effective treatment, the nerve compression causes of migraine was identified.

Surgeons at University Hospitals discovered  that nerves released during cosmetic forehead surgery could cure or reduce migraines.  Building on that work and combined with discoveries from Georgetown and Southwestern medical schools, a complete treatment program for migraines was created.

The significant cure rate was proven during a sham surgery trial.  Sham surgery involves patients undergoing anesthesia and then creating the incision but doing nothing beyond the appearance of an operation.  By comparing volunteers randomly and blindly assigned to either the real or sham group, confirmation of the improvement was proven.
