Tyco International Executives to Speak at Speakers Series November 14

Nov. 2, 2011 - PRLog -- Newark, NJ – In the aftermath of the 2002 Tyco International scandal, involving the excesses by its former chairman and CEO and other senior managers, Tyco International’s new CEO, Ed Breen, assembled a new senior management team to lead the company’s efforts to build an ethical organizational culture.  The Institute for Ethical Leadership (IEL) at Rutgers Business School welcomes three key executives to its speaker series titled “The Tyco Story: Past Present & Future – How to Recover from Unethical Management Behavior”.  During the November 14th event, the Tyco executives will discuss their experiences working closely with senior management to build and promote a culture of ethics and integrity across a highly-diversified global company.

“The new management team at Tyco has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to compliance and business ethics, not only through statements evidencing a strong Tone at the Top, but also through tough, visible actions that carry more impact than words,” said Matthew Tanzer, vice president and chief compliance counsel at Tyco.  “Under the new leadership, Tyco has walked away from profitable business that could not be obtained ethically, closed or sold operations that presented too great a compliance risk, and removed employees who failed to behave in accordance with Tyco’s strict and unwavering values.”

Tyco Executives will take participants through approaches to address and promote a culture of ethics and integrity in a complex and ever changing world.  “The role of business leaders and executives has changed, expanded and grown dramatically more complex over the years,” said Alex J. Plinio, co-founder of the IEL.  “We are excited to welcome three business leaders who work each day in that complex environment.  They will share the Tyco Story, the difficult past, the much improved present and plans for the future.  Through our Institute corporate partnerships and the deep commitment from distinguished ethics and compliance leaders in business like Tyco, we continue to open a dialouge addressing difficult business challenges while positively influencing leaders of today and of the future.”  The event’s objectives include: learning about Tyco’s past experience with unethical management behavior; learning how to handle and recover from a crisis situation; the importance of training and educating associates; and how to build and sustain an ethical organization culture.

The event will take place at the Rutgers Business School, 1 Washington Park, Newark, New Jersey, 9:30 am until 12:00 pm.  In the past, the IEL has presented Speaker Series events on “Giving Voice to Values” and “Bribery & Corruption in the Global Economy—Mitigating Risk through Effective Corporate Leadership & Culture”.   These events featured well-renowned speakers in the field of ethical leadership.

Matthew O. Tanzer, Vice President and Compliance Chief Counsel
Tanzer has directed Tyco's global compliance programs since 2006, during which time the company has dramatically improved its reputation for ethical business practices.  He and his team work closely with Tyco's senior management and Board of Directors to promote a culture of ethics and integrity globally, as well as provide legal advice, counseling, education and business support to Tyco's varied businesses.

John S. Jenkins, Jr., Corporate Secretary and International General Counsel
Jenkins has been with Tyco since early 2003, just after its reputational crisis began.  He joined the company after representing the conglomerate as outside counsel while working as a commercial litigator at McGuire Woods.  He has witnessed a dramatic transformation at Tyco, following a series of bold changes designed to restore the company's reputation as a highly respected corporate entity.

Dennis Lynch, Vice President, Chief Litigation Counsel
Lynch is responsible for managing all of Tyco's litigation worldwide.   In 2004, he joined Tyco as chief litigation counsel for its Fire and Security segment. Previously, Mr. Lynch was assistant general counsel at Unisys Corporation and in private practice with a leading Philadelphia law firm.
