Nov. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Music just isn’t as good when it’s not shared with others, and hanging with friends just isn’t as good without music. These two ideas are at the heart of Viva La Playlist – a collaborative playlist-building application that allows users to watch music videos, chat with friends, and construct ever-changing mixes online.

The social media application, which officially launched this week, allows users to add music videos from YouTube’s vast library to create an initial playlist. Friends listening to the playlist can chat with others in the room, vote songs up or down the list, and add their own contributions whenever the mood’s right. Unlike other social video or music platforms, playlists aren’t dictated by one DJ or VJ: the group decides together what to listen to and what they like – and the playlist changes with the conversation, the mood, and the people in the room.

“We wanted to create something online that was more like a real-life music listening experience: a group of friends hanging out in a basement with a stereo and a stack of CDs, or a group of friends on their way to a party in the car sharing songs on their iPods,” said Viva La Playlist co-founder Josh Ostrow. “It’s rare that you’re out with your friends and one person decides on what music is playing, or that you don’t talk about the lyrics, stories, or emotions that those songs evoke. That environment just didn’t exist online. We wanted to make the online social music experience democratic again.”

Viva La Playlist operates under the knowledge that a few DJs or a computer program shouldn’t have all the power – that all users should have the ability to override bad choices and request to song they’ve been telling their friends about. The social music website also understands that the playlist should change along with the mood and/or the people who come in and out of the station.

Ready to watch music videos online with your friends in a democratic way? Ready for the freedom of song choice to return to the people? Take back the power today by creating your first collaborative mix at Viva La Playlist!

Who is behind Viva la Playlist?

Viva La Playlist was created by Brian Schneider and Josh Ostrow, two friends, colleagues, and software engineers who were looking for a better way to share music with each other and create playlists online while they worked. When they couldn’t find a social music website that allowed them to build everchanging mixes, chat, and vote on songs, they decided to make one themselves. What are Brian and Josh listening to right now as they code? Join them at http://VivaLaPlaylist.com to see what’s playing, add a song, and vote on what you want to hear next.
