Two KMC, Mangalore students win accolades at ISCOMS.

Two final year MBBS students, Chetan Mandelia and Yashasvi Chugh of KMC, Mangalore won accolades for their presentations at the 18th International Student Congress of Medical Sciences (ISCOMS) at UMCG, Groningen, Netherlands from June 7 to 10, 2011

Oct. 31, 2011 - PRLog -- Two final year MBBS students, Chetan Mandelia and Yashasvi Chugh of KMC, Mangalore won accolades for their presentations at the 18th International Student Congress of Medical Sciences (ISCOMS) at University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), Groningen, Netherlands from June 7 to 10, 2011.

Seven students represented KMC at the Congress. Of them, two made oral presentations and 5 poster presentations. ISCOMS is the largest medical students conference in the world being held since last 18 years and more than 550 participants from over 40 nations and 2 Nobel laureates attended the conference this year.

Chetan Mandelia won the Best Paper Award in Public Health for oral presentation of his study titled, “Effects of occupational tobacco exposure on fetal growth, among beedi-rollers in coastal Karnataka”.  This study was done as ICMR STS-2010 project under the guidance of Dr. S.H. Subba, Dept. of Community Medicine.

Yashasvi Chugh won the Best Paper Award in Medical Microbiology for poster presentation of his study titled, “How effective is hand washing in clinical practice? A study conducted on undergraduate medical students”. This study was done under the Manipal University UG Research Grant under the guidance of Dr. Shrikala Baliga, Dept. of Microbiology.

Shruti Kongara, Maithreyi Swaminathan, Mr. Arpit Sharma, Mr. Rakesh G (Final MBBS students) and Mr. Sandeep Vangala (Intern) also presented their research studies, which were well appreciated by the judges and the audience.
Four of the seven; Maithreyi, Shruti, Yashasvi and Chetan, were also selected for a 2-week ISCOMS Research Fellowship (IRF) and worked on research projects in different departments of the same university.

Mr. Yashasvi and Mr. Chetan were awarded a travel grant by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for attending this conference.
The college had the highest number of participants in the research fellowship program (4 out of 23) amongst all colleges globally and maximum number of delegates in the conference from India.
