Fatten up the birds for Christmas
‘Fat Bird’, was designed by Max McMurdo to encourage the re-use of cooking fat. The DIY kit is the perfect gift for this season, for a friend, family member or simply for our feathery neighbours.

It is our duty to feed the birds, and this is a fun, and easy task with the DIY ‘Fat Bird’ kit. It is a big naughty ‘no-no’ to pour cooking fat down the sink, as it blocks sewers. It is also a bad thing to bury it in the soil! Instead, why not put the greasy stuff to good use? All you have to do is pour leftover cooking fat into the cute case [which has big bird feet to keep it stable], add the provided seeds and refrigerate until set… hey presto, you have a fat cake.
The cases can then be hung outside as a tree treat for the birds. They need to be out of direct sunlight, obviously to avoid melting into a messy mush, but let’s face it, there isn’t much winter sun in good old Blighty.
If you hang the feeders at staggered heights, you can attract lots of different species such as sparrows, blue tits, black birds and green finches, and when you have run out of seeds from your Fat Bird box, you can start to add some of their favorite foods such as peanuts and black sunflower seeds. The silicon cases are re-usable, so there’s no excuse to stop the goodwill after Santa’s been.
This is a fun and thoughtful way to get children involved in the environment and wildlife, so when you are making yourself a nice chocolate cupcake or mince pie, pop one in for the birds too!
