Two students at Sunrise Aviation's Jacksonville satellite flight school successfully completed  their first solo flights this week. The two students were Seth Van Buren and Mike Martin.  Both students completed the flights in a Cessna 172.  Both of the new solo pilots are students at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ).  Sunrise Aviation is the flight training vendor at Cecil Airport for FSCJ.

Seth Van Buren accomplished his first solo on Thursday, October 27th and Mike Martin did his first solo on Friday, October 28th.  The Sunrise Aviation flight instructor for both students was Mark Davidson.

Florida State College at Jacksonville offers several aviation degrees at their Cecil Center South campus.  The Associate of Science degrees include Professional Pilot Technology, Aviation Operations including Air Traffic Control, and Aviation Maintenance Management.  FSCJ recently celebrated their 10th anniversary at Cecil Airport in Jacksonville.  Florida residents pay less than $100 per college credit hour at FSCJ for these programs.  FSCJ's use of four Redbird simulators (Advanced Aviation Training Devices) also helps reduce the cost of pilot training for students.  FSCJ can also enroll foreign students under the F-1 student visa program.

Sunrise Aviation has two locations in Florida.  The main base of operations is at Ormond Beach where the school has nearly 40 aircraft.  The Ormond Beach base caters to a mostly international pilot training clientele and has trained students from more than 50 countries.  This location is approved to accept students under the M-1 student visa program under the the US Government's International Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).  Current students come from as far away as India, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Brazil, Turkey, Belize, Jamaica, and Malaysia.  Sunrise Aviation has recently received approval to train students with VA benefits at their Ormond Beach location.

Sunrise Aviation now has 6 aircraft based at the Cecil Airport, Jacksonville satellite.  These aircraft include Cessna 172 Skyhawks, Cessna 152s, Piper Arrow , and Piper Seminole.  A 2011 Piper Warrior with Garmin G500 glass cockpit avionics will be added soon to the fleet in Jacksonville.  Sunrise Aviation now has an arrangement with the FBO at Cecil Airport that will permit students not part of the FSCJ program to take flight training lessons and rent aircraft at Sunrise Aviation.  Sunrise Aviation is currently the only flight school at Cecil Airport.
