| Opening night of Dylan Thomas Festival attracts crowdsA large audience packed into the Dylan Thomas Centre for the launch of the Dylan Thomas Festival on Thursday.
By: City and County of Swansea The evening started with the official opening of the Lee Miller Visiting Picasso photography exhibition which features renowned artist Pablo Picasso. Miller charted her remarkable friendship with Picasso from 1937 to his death in 1973 and the exhibition includes images of other members of the international surrealist circle and is regarded as a unique and intimate portrait of life close to Picasso. Lee’s son Antony Penrose then gave an illustrated talk on his mother and Picasso’s friendship and told their story using many of photographs which are featured in the exhibition. Jo Furber, Literature Officer at the Dylan Thomas Centre said “I’m delighted that the launch of this year’s Dylan Thomas Festival attracted such a large crowd. "The festival is one of the finest cultural events in the country and its popularity is evidence of Dylan’s enduring appeal”. Among the people in attendance was Dylan’s grand-daughter Hannah Ellis. The Dylan Thomas Festival continues until 9 November with a variety of events including verbal fireworks from local writers Joe Dunthorne and Sarah Coles.
