Follow on Google News | Quarryathon proves success for youth charityThe first ever ‘Quarryathon’ held last week in Halvasso near Penryn has proven to be a success.
By: Britta Hoffmann The charity is still collecting all sponsorship monies and is hoping to raise £2000 with the event. Funds raised will go towards BF Adventure’s newly launched “Building Brighter Futures Appeal” which will help the organisation to replace their old portacabins with new indoor space. The additional buildings are urgently needed to support the increasing number of disadvantaged children in Cornwall. Participants of the Quarryathon also had the choice to donate half of their sponsorship money to another charity of their choice. The competition was won by the team “Mark and the Stonehouse Starlets” which completed the course in only 41 minutes, followed by the “Nuns on the Run” who also impressed with their costumes and the “824 Naval Air Squadron” in third position. The prize for the best fancy dress went to “The Budget Superheroes” The winning team was awarded with their own piece of quarry in form of a trophy made from granite. Prizes were donated by the Greenbank Hotel and Delta Force Paintball. After the award ceremony participants enjoyed a hard earned burger and a drink before dancing to the tunes of cover band the Merlins Rockit. The BBQ was sponsored by Skinners Brewery and Cornish Food Market. Adrian Richards, CEO at BF Adventure said: “The event has been fantastic and we are impressed with the number of teams that have signed up for the challenge. The Quarryathon will now become an annual event and we have already set the date for next year’s race.” John Craze team member of the “Nuns on the run” said: “We had such a great time taking part in the Quarryathon whilst supporting a good cause. We will definitely be coming back in 2012.” Since 1989 youth charity BF Adventure (formerly called ‘The Bishop’s Forum’) has been working with disadvantaged children in Cornwall, helping those in need to gain the confidence and skills to turn their life around and move towards a bright future.
