Motown Writers Network Announces
8th Annual Essence of Motown Literary Jam &Conference
To celebrate the written word in Metro Detroit with every reader and writer around!

DETROIT – “Strengthening the Literary Community to Increase Literacy” is the theme of the 8th Annual Essence of Motown Literary Jam and Conference, hosted by the Motown Writers Network, in partnership for a third year with the non-profit organization, Detroit Impact.  The conference is November 11 and 12, 2011 at the Virgil Carr Cultural Arts Center in the Paradise Valley District, downtown Detroit, and aims to celebrate the literary arts with Detroit area authors, writers and avid readers.

The two-day event opens at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 11 with networking, and youth poetry, followed by the Passion Fruit Poetry Festival, hosted by EchoVerse at 7 p.m. (must be 18 years and older to attend). On Saturday, November 12 the conference starts at 8 a.m. and includes writing, publishing and marketing workshops, lunch and a Poetry Panel.  There will also be a Literary Marketplace for author signings, discussions, and new book releases by local authors. Giveaways, including two Amazon Kindles and more will take place all weekend for readers and authors.

The conference is an opportunity for aspiring and established authors and writers to connect with colleagues, peers and most importantly, patrons of their art: readers.  Since 2000, the Motown Writers Network has served as a viable resource and networking organization for writers in the metropolitan Detroit area.  This year is the organization’s 11th anniversary.

“The fact that this is our 11th year as an organization and our conference falls on 11/11/11 is something special,” says Sylvia Hubbard, founder of the Motown Writers Network.  “I’m especially exited about our Literary Panel Discussion this year. I’m looking forward to the
discussion on increasing literacy in our community with our all male panel moderated by Ramona Prater, radio host and author of In the Pink.”

The panel discussion, which begins at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 12 includes, Detroit City Councilman James Tate; Dr. Reginald Eadie, director, Detroit Receiving Hospital; Calvin Colbert, executive director, Detroit Impact; Kenneth Harris, president/CEO Michigan Black Chamber of Commerce; Houston-based author, Vincent Alexandria; Detroit authors Khary Kimani Turner, Yurself Shakur, and Eddie Connor. Congressman Hansen Clarke will offer remarks at 2:15 p.m.

Over the past seven years, more than 1,600 authors, writers and readers have gathered to celebrate the literary arts in Detroit and to strengthen literacy in metro Detroit. To that end, the community is encouraged to bring books (new or gently used) for donations to our Motown Literacy Project to increase literacy in Metro Detroit!

Sponsors of the 8th Annual Essence of Motown Literary Jam & Conference include The Literary Loft, Versandra Kennebrew Intl, EnigmaGraphics, Motown Writers Network, Rolling Out Magazine, Penguin Books, AND Communications, EchoVerse, Detroit Impact Center, 360DigitalBooks and HubBooks.
