Oct. 20, 2011 - PRLog -- Back Page Magazine recently sat down with Canadian film director Laura Archibald, who discussed her new film “Greenwich Village: The Music that Defined a Generation.”

This documentary is the first in-depth film ever made about the militant Greenwich Village music scene that changed the political, social and cultural landscape forever.  The film includes 2 dozen interviews, rare archival footage and new musical performances from a cast of folk/rock legends including Lucy & Carly Simon, Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, Kris Kristofferson, Ian & Sylvia, and Buffy Sainte-Marie.

The interview, conducted by journalist Marshall Ward, is the first given by director Archibald, who soon will be taking “Greenwich Village:  The Music that Defined a Generation” on the film festival circuit.

Back Page Magazine editor Jeff Cazanov feels that this story and this documentary dovetails perfectly with the goals of the online magazine.  “We want to celebrate the music of the past, but specifically those major songwriters who continue to be relevant today,” says Cazanov.

“With the national ‘Occupy’ movements spreading, the themes of citizen activism and music’s role in folk protest seem to be having a resurgence,” adds Cazanov.  “The Greenwich Village music scene was one of the flashpoints for activism, but moreover, one of the coolest times and places in musical history.”

Other musicians who sprung from the Greenwich Village scene include almost all of folk-rock’s seminal singer/songwriters including Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Harry Chapin, James Taylor, Jean Ritchie, The Mamas & Papas, Melanie, Phil Ochs, Carolyn Hester, Simon & Garfunkel, Roger McGuinn, Joan Baez, John Prine, Richie Havens, Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Rush, Peter Paul & Mary, and John Sebastian.
