Iconic Beatles canvas art is sold at Christies auction house New York

Oct. 18, 2011 - PRLog -- An iconic photograph of The Beatles that was taken by Mike Mitchell, which captured the fabulous four at their first concert in America, has been sold recently in New York.  The 16x16 gelatin print, which shows the bands backlit silhouettes, was expected to sell for an estimated $2,000 and $3,000. The photograph was sold along with all the other 46 photographs Mitchell took at Christie’s auction house for a collective total of $362,000.

All of Mitchell’s photographs of the band have remained in glassine envelopes until recently, and the majority of them remained unprinted for around 40 years.  They stayed this way until one night when Mike was in front of the television and watched a television broadcast of the Beatles first ever concert in the US and recognised himself striding across the stage.

Ever since Mitchell first started his photography, he has been more concerned with capturing light than the actual photographic image itself. This quality has been very clear throughout all of his high quality commercial work.  He even distilled his own art down to glass beads, which he placed onto canvas which caught the full spectrum of light without the use of a camera.

His excellent one of a kind documentary photography has captured one of the most historic events in pop-culture, and clearly portrays the artist’s excellent photographic skills.  Together, these are the reasons why the numerous pieces of striking artwork has been sold for such a high price, and will be worth so much more in the years to come.
