Washington, DC – October 17, 2011 – The 2011 Reel Independent Film Extravaganza Awards Finale will be a red carpet event that will take place Sunday Oct 23 at THEARC Theater in Washington, DC at 6:00pm. The awards ceremony will highlight some of the festivals featured films. Awards being presented for the festival include | Best Documentary, Best DMV Documentary, Best Short Film, Best DMV Short Film, Best Feature Film, Best DMV Feature Film, Reel Audience Award, Best Foreign Language Film, Reel Emerging Talent Award and Best Screenplay.

This will be the first year the Reel Independent Film Extravaganza will honor DC natives such as DC “Mayor for Life” Marion Barry for the DMV Reel Icon Award, filmmaker Kirk Fraser for the DMV Reel Filmmaker Award and DC Community Activist Tony Lewis Jr. for the DMV Reel Community Award.

Current Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry will be presented with the 2011 RIFE’s 2011 DMV Reel ICON Award for his accomplishments for DC residents. No matter his past or current trials Marion Barry created programs and opportunities for DC while in office and still today strive to make DC a better Nation’s Capital. From creating summer youth jobs and other programs for the less fortunate…DC will never have another like Barry and he will never be forgotten and known as “Mayor for Life.”

Filmmaker, Kirk Fraser will be the recipient of the 2011 RIFE’s very first 2011 DMV Reel Filmmaker Award. The award is well deserved as Kirk is the filmmaker to observe for quality educating and entertaining films, he will become a household name in the next coming years. Responsible for projects such as the Len Bias Story, ESPN’s 30 for 30, BET’s American Gangster, BET’s Lil Kim: Countdown to Lockdown and more. Witness Kirk receive his award on Sunday following the screening of “Mayor for Life.”

Tony Lewis Jr. is a DC Community Activist who represents his city like no other. As a child of DC 1980’s drug and crime epidemic, Tony never allowed his circumstances to become his reality. Son of Tony Lewis, alleged right hand man to drug kingpin Rayful Edmonds, who is now serving a life sentence in prison, Lewis Jr. is determined to lead by example and give back to the community that he so loves. “Sons of Life” is an organization for children who have incarcerated parents. Mr. Lewis has served the citizens of Washington, DC through campaigning for the homeless, charity events, food drives and clothing donations. Come out to support a man who has unselfishly supported those in need in the Washington, DC area receive the 2011 DMV Community Award after the screening of his documentary, “Sons of Life.”
