A study conducted by Group Health Research Institute found that out of 401 patients between the age of 20 to 65 years old with chronic low-back pain which compared how effective massage was compared to medication and physical therapy.

The participants of the study were split into three groups.  The first received a swedish full body relaxation massage.  The second group had focused deep tissue massage focusing on specific pain related tissue, ligaments and joints.  The third group took painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxers and physical therapy.  The groups receiving massages had one-hour massges once a week for ten weeks.

The participants were surveyed about symptoms and mobility after 10 weeks, six months and again after one year.  The two groups that received the massages reported their back pain was significantly improved or completely gone.

Dr. Cherkin reported "We found that patients receiving massage were twice as likely as those receiving usual care to report signicant improvements in both their pain and function, after ten weeks which showed about two-thirds of those receiving massage improved substantially, versus only about one-third in the usual care group."
