By: Pamela-Faith Jackson The world premiere of six new plays will be featured on the Alliance Black Box Theatre Stage during the 2011 Young Voices With New Visions Short Play Festival, Saturday, November 5th at Woodruff Arts Center. Founding Producer, Pamela- Faith says, "Collaborations like these provide exciting opportunities for young people to premiere new plays, showcase local talent, and provide backstage/tech experience for high school and college students. 2011 marks the first time that the YVNV Short Play Fest will be held at the prestigious Tony Award-winning theater." We are especially excited to have Neko Parham, tv &film actor/director (who can be seen in upcoming episodes of Single Ladies) join the YVNV team. Celise Kalke, Alliance Theatre Director of New Projects, Chris Moses, Director of Alliance Theatre Education Department, Tony Loadholt, Director Visual/Performing Arts Magnet Program, Dawn Axam, Dance Coordinator for Tri-Cities HS Magnet Program, Mary Vanderhoek, Director of Riverwood High School Theatre Program shared the vision for expansion of the YVNV new play development program. This marks the 3rd annual YVNV Short Play Fest which grants stage productions to the winners of the YVNV “Write A Dream” Short Play Competition adjudicated by Susan Watson, Prof., Lehman College, Kimberly Harding, Prof.,Florida A & M, Sydne Mahone, Prof.,University of Iowa, and Janice Liddell, V.P. for Academic Affairs, Atlanta Metropolitan College. The six selections comprise a variety of styles and genres. The Saturday Afternoon Showcase will feature plays by elementary school students—MILITARY MRACLE by Annie Echemendia, Julia Metz, and Alyssa Walter, a post 911 Christmas drama about a young girl and her military dad.; A CHANGE IN MY LIFE by Jaila Williams, a depiction of divorce as seen through the eyes of a child; and OLD MAPLE by Rayna Richardson, a sweet environmental play about an endangered tree. The Saturday Evening Showcase will feature plays by middle and high school students—BROKEN HEARTED BEAUTY by Gianna Scerbo, a lyrical look at the affect of alcoholism on an innocent child; GHOST OF THE LIVING by Zaphira Matthews, a spine-tingling thriller about the abduction of a parent; and MY BODY, MY SOUL by Grace Ivey,a stark look at the clues left behind after suicide. All of the students with the exception of Zaphira Matthews attend Fulton County Schools including Riverwood High School, Sandy Springs MS and Woodland Elementary School. Zaphira Matthews hails from Bronx, NY. Tickets are available on-line through PAY PAL on the YVNV website. Limited seating. Purchase ticket(s) early. YOUNG VOICES WITH NEW VISIONS SHORT PLAY FEST was envisioned by Founder/Producing Director Pamela-Faith Jackson as a means of giving voice to young playwrights in a nurturing creative environment. The Young Voices With New Visions Short Play Fest provides a haven for audience members and artists alike to share in the new play development process. Announced finalists receive a staged production of their new work. November 5th, on the Alliance Black Box Theatre stage at Woodruff Arts Center, YVNV will feature plays by kids, about kids for you. Young Voices With New Visions has produced 10 world premieres of plays written by young people in grades 4-12. YVNV "Write A Dream" Short Play Competition is now accepting original short plays.
