10 Tips to Battle Winter Dry Skin

How to give your skin that year round summer glow

Oct. 17, 2011 - PRLog -- LOS ANGELES, California -- Because environmental humidity tends to be lower in the wintertime, you are more prone to dry skin. You get flaky, itchy, dull, and cracked skin when your natural protective oils are depleted and then moisture escapes.

To combat this winter moisture loss, here are 10 ways to keep your skin soft, supple, and glowy – even in winter:

1.   Easy on the cleansing.  Keep the washing of your skin to a minimum to avoid unnecessarily removing more natural protective oils.

2.   Shower in warm, not hot, water.  The more hot your water is, the more natural protective oils are removed from the skin.

3.   Avoid harsh soaps.  Look for mild soaps and cleansers.  They will often be labeled as being unscented, gentle, super-fatted (loaded with oils), or for sensitive skin.

4.   Pat, not rub.  After a shower, pat yourself dry instead of rubbing – again, to avoid rubbing off natural oils.

5.   Apply restorative plant oils. As soon as possible after showering, rub restorative natural, plant oils into the skin. Restorative plant oils can help to trap and seal water in the skin in a healthy way, as well as rejuvenate the necessary protective oils that your skin needs to prevent dry skin.  Try specially formulated organic products like California Sunshine Cosmetics’ Sunny Day, which contains argan and sunflower oils.

6.   Apply moisturizers.  After restorative plant oils, liberally apply a cream or lotion moisturizer.  This adds additional protection.  Look for heavier creams and lotions for the wintertime.

7.   Use a humidifier.  An humidifier in your home and workplace can help to raise environmental humidity and reduce skin dryness.  If you invest in 2-3 smaller humidifiers, then you can strategically place them around your home for the best results – the bedroom, the kitchen, the living room.

8.   Drink water.  While staying hydrated is often a summertime topic, it is just as important in winter and can affect your skin.  The Mayo Clinic says water quantity varies by individual, but that generally you want to drink eight 8-ouce glasses of fluid per day – and “all fluids count toward the daily total.”

9.   Take off wet clothes.  Wet clothes against your skin accelerates the removal of the natural protective oils.  So, take off wet clothing, including wet gloves, as soon as possible, pat dry, and reapply natural oils and moisturizer.

10.   Don’t lick your lips.  The more you lick dry lips, the drier they will become because you are licking off the natural, protective oils – which causes easier moisture loss and lip cracking.  Instead, rub in a plant oil product on the lips, and apply a lip gloss to seal in moisture.  And, at night liberally apply plant oils to help restore lip suppleness by morning.
