Oct. 15, 2011 - PRLog -- A 53 year old gentleman suffering from a large sized kidney stone was operated upon successfully in a complicated surgery at the Wockhardt Hospital  by Dr. Madhav Sanzgiri, Senior Consultant of Urology.

The patient complained of severe left flank pain and of passing blood in the urine, and investigations revealed an infection and the ultrasound confirmed the presence of a horseshoe kidney with a complete staghorn kidney stone on the left side. Staghorn kidney stones are large sized stones caused due to a bacterial infection that causes urea to increase the content of ammonia in the urine leading to the formation of struvite crystalline stones in the shape of a staghorn.

“Traditionally, open surgery was used to treat staghorn stones but now with advanced technology and better expertise, minimally invasive surgery is the best option” said Dr. Sanzgiri.  The patient was treated in a two-puncture ‘Percutaneous Nephrolithotripsy’ (PCNL), where a 26-Fr tract with the Electro Medical System (EMS) that combined pneumatic and ultrasound energy was used. The flexible nephroscope augmented the ease in performing the procedure. The procedure was especially challenging due to the presence of the large stone in the horseshoe kidney (congenital disorder). In a horseshoe kidney, the kidneys are fused at the lower poles to form a horseshoe shape.

The keyhole surgery left the patient with only a small 1 cm long scar and completely free of pain. The patient is now recovering fairly well and ready for discharge.  “I would like to extend my deepest gratitude at Wockhardt Hospital for their excellent patient care and the high professionalism and competence of the team” said the patient.
