By: Annie Drury Prior to joining After-School All-Stars, Isabel taught seventh grade English for eight years, served as chair of the English Department, helped mentor new teachers, and was part of the school’s improvement team in northeast Las Vegas, Nevada. Her contributions attributed to a 34 percent increase of the English Language Arts (ELA) standardized test scores of her students. A proud graduate of the California public school system, Isabel is dedicated to improving programs for underprivileged youth and previously led training programs for her school, local centers and national organizations such as Teach for America on topics such as writing. With Leadership Certification and bilingual abilities, Isabel’s experience will help her relate to students within San Diego After-School All-Stars and allow her to pursue her passion of helping youth thrive both academically and personally. “My passion is to help each student reach their full potential in school and in life, no matter where they come from or what circumstances they may be facing,” said Program Manager Isabel Gomez. “As an educator, I’ve seen first-hand how effective after-school programs are, and I am eager to take part in helping youth who need it the most and strengthening the curriculum of this top-notch program.” Isabel holds a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in education from Washington State University.
