Salon Oasis Employees Participate in 165 Miles Bike Ride November 18-19

Oct. 11, 2011 - PRLog -- BOCA RATON, FL, October 11, 2011 -- In it’s eighth year since Glen Weinzimer created The SMART Ride (www.thesmartride.org), the nonprofit has raised more than $2.6 million. One hundred percent of the proceeds for the annual 156-mile bike ride benefits organizations that provide services to those infected by HIV/AIDES in Florida. They donate half of what each rider raises evenly to the six organizations that include: Broward House, Inc., Comprehensive AIDS Program of Palm Beach County, Inc. (CAP), AIDS Help, Miracle of Love Inc., The Center for Positive Connections (TCPC), and the Metropolitan Charities, Inc.
And two very dedicated Salon Oasis employees, Glenn David Jones and Les Wild, are training for the longest ride of their lives.

The November 18-19 ride, themed “Game On”, will award several prizes at the end of the route. This is a ride, and not a race, so riders go at their own pace.

“We have riders going various speeds, anywhere from 12 miles per hour to 21,” says Glen, SMART Ride creator and organizer.

The ride begins in Pinecrest, in southern Miami-Dade County, and continues down Old Cutler Road to US 1, then to Card Sound Road and back to US 1 and will continue directly into Key West, FL. And for the first time in eight years, SMART Ride has sold out. They have reached the maximum capacity for registered riders (450), and have an over 200 crewmembers. Each rider commits to raising a minimum of $1,250 in donations, and they are accepted right up until the event begins.  

Glenn and Les, employees of Salon Oasis in Boca Raton, have created a very strict training schedule to prepare for the ride, and have squeezed in a rigorous training schedule in with their busy work as stylists for the salon. Their regimen includes lifting weights three to four times per week and riding thirty miles each day three to four times a week. This often is in the wee hours of the morning. Their training rides typically follow A1A along Boca Raton up into Boynton Beach.

“I became involved in part because I am celebrating my 60th birthday this year,” says Glenn. “I requested to be rider number 60 to commemorate this milestone year.”

Glenn is riding for the first time this year and is excited to make the trek with Les, who participated in 2010. They are both listed on the website, www.thesmartride.org with their rider numbers for anyone who would like to make a donation. Glenn David Jones is rider number 60 and Les Wild is rider number 350.
Margaret Mead may have summed it up best “never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world, indeed; it’s the only think that ever has.”
