Bruce Lee captured the hearts and minds of millions of people across the world, martial artists and otherwise. Many athletes and general fans were overtaken by his ability and charisma, but were equally as taken by his stunning physique. Training to be the next Bruce Lee isn't easy, but there is definitely a blueprint if you see the way that Lee worked to make himself.

Your starting point for becoming the next Bruce Lee is to know what he was made of so you can create your own persona while drawing on his work ethic and philosophies. Being the next Bruce Lee isn't just about emulating him, but being you and emulating his work ethic in your style and practice.

What made Bruce Lee different from other martial arts instructors was his belief that you shouldn't have to stick to a form when fighting your opponent. "Absorb what is useful. Reject what is useless." You can see the idea right away by dissecting his words, what is useless to you should be discarded. You should only use what works for you and your style and forget the rest.

Archaic fighting styles were upsetting to Bruce Lee and he wanted people to be able to design what worked for them. "Jeet Kune Do" was the approach to fighting that Bruce Lee used to teach his followers, though he hated calling it a "style". The words mean "the way of the intercepting fist" and it was what the man believed in deeply. The name itself is telling of Bruce Lee’s philosophy-everything can be of advantage to the fighter, do not discount that which can be useful in your situation.

This should be the beginning of your approach to being the next great fighter, the next Lee, that you develop a style that is unique to you. You can do what is right for you, the style or approach that works specifically for your skillset, rather than being trained to do something else.

For instance, Lee's approach was to attack the other fighter just as they were about to attack him. He believed they were open for the strike at this time and he was ready to strike. Training and focus are still necessary so you can find your style, but the focus isn't on learning a set system, instead it is about finding your way.

Remember the approach that he used was to tone his body through weight training and refine his skill through cardio -based punching and kicking. Routine was created through repeating the same motions and combinations so the fighter would be prepared and confident in battle.

"The successful warrior is the average man, with laser-like focus."

These words were spoken by Bruce Lee, but were more loudly stated through his actions and routines. Surprising things were allowed to enter Lee's life, such as tea, but he was able to stay away from most harmful products.

The tremendous carbohydrates in Chinese food were of particular interest to him as they allowed him to feed his very active lifestyle. Vitamins and high protein drinks were used to feed his body the necessary products to achieve the goals that he had set so high.
Enthusiasm is needed to achieve most things in life and you will need to have plenty of it to achieve on the level of Bruce Lee. In fact, beyond the focus and the enthusiasm was the ability to stick to a strict yet realistic training environment.

Becoming the Next Lee

For those people that are truly great fans and followers of Bruce Lee there is an obvious issue with wanting to be the next Lee. The basic problem comes from the fact that someone with the philosophy of Lee wouldn’t want someone aspiring to be like him. His teaching and approach to martial arts was to say that everyone had a different approach that worked for them.

The approach to fighting that he created, Jeet Kune Do, was exactly this philosophy. What works for you and maybe someone else may not work for another, and vice versa. This is a key principle you must remember when you want to become the next Lee.
Don’t emulate the moves and the styles that he used; instead emulate the approach to life and the approach to martial arts to create your own style. If you look at Lee’s approach you will see easily that he wanted people to create their own combinations and approaches, not copy someone else. You certainly wouldn’t be wasting time to adopt some of Bruce Lee’s style and workout routine. Generally though, look for your own fluidity and combinations.

So, what can you bring to the game? What separates you from the rest? This is where you can begin if you aspire to be the next Lee. Find within yourself what it is that separates you from the pack and start to exploit it.

At the same time, you can be emulating Lee directly by preparing with the same focus and enthusiasm that he did for everything in life. Treat your body as if it is your vehicle to greatness and take pride in the product that you present through your fighting.

The most special part of Bruce Lee was that he had a style that was different and he was not afraid to pursue his beliefs. He was ridiculed by many in his community for shunning the styles and patterns that were taught and used at the time. He stood up and did what he thought was right and proper for his situation.

For the next Lee this same prophecy must be true. The person that can overcome the odds to achieve world renowned status as an elite fighter with a style of his or her own will command the attention of everyone. This next Lee will be ready to show off his or her style regardless of what the feedback may be. The Next Lee is about a self awareness and character to withstand blows from coming from any direction and at any strength or speed.

Forgetting about the status quo or what is acceptable in the community will be a trait that is necessary. As you can see, nothing about becoming the next Lee will be easy, but the rewards can be incredible.

Could you be the Next Lee?
