Dallas Photographer Goes Back To The Past

Dallas, Texas, October 8, 2011 — As technology races ahead at a frantic pace, Dallas portrait artist Larry Lourcey is choosing to move backwards in time.  He has taken the Cubist look, made popular by Picasso, and brought it up to date with modern photography.  The resulting images can be quite stunning.

Lourcey’s interest in Cubist began back in 2009, while he was working on a self-portrait project to commemorate his 40th birthday.  
“I was desperate for portrait concept ideas, so I started researching the Master painters.” says Lourcey.  “I thought Cubism would be an easy look to replicate and decided to give it a try.”
After researching the style, he created his first PhotoCubist image.   “I was wrong about it being easy.” he jokes.

He starts by taking several photographs of the subject, from different angles.  He then crops the images into smaller pieces and re-assembles them on the final image.  His goal is to keep things just realistic enough that you can tell what it is, while keeping in the spirit of the Cubist style.  
The technique has been quite a hit with Lourcey’s clients and peers, earning him several awards in the process.  He typically only creates a few of the images each year.

“It is a very time-consuming process, so I try and spread them out a bit.” says Lourcey.  “I will usually put the process on the shelf for a while - until I come up with a cool twist that I want to try out.”
