Preparing 1,600 Thanksgiving meals for the homeless and disadvantaged

Oct. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- On Thanksgiving Monday, October 10, from 12:00 to 2:30 p.m., Good Shepherd Centre (412 Queen Street East) will be preparing a festive meal for the needy in our community. The meal is served free of charge.

The Centre is preparing to serve 1,600 meals this Thanksgiving. Guests will enjoy a roast turkey dinner with gravy and cranberry sauce followed by fruit pie. Fifty volunteers will serve the meal.

For the meal, kitchen staff and volunteers will:
•   cook and slice 140 turkeys (7 to 9 kilos or 15-20 pounds each)  
•   make 57 litres (15 gallons) of gravy
•   peel, cook and mash 680 kilos (1,500 pounds) of potatoes
•   cook 181 kilos (400 pounds) mixed veggies
•   make 227 kilos (500 pounds) of stuffing from scratch
•   slice 250 fruit pies
•   serve 120 dozen dinner rolls
