Armed with a tri-fold mission to make the planet greener, make CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) lighting more attractive, and, most importantly, put disabled young adults to work, Twist’N LLC founders Tom and Renee East are bringing a long-missing product to light with their CFL cover product line. The covers are available in three sizes to fit ceiling fans, vanities/pendants, and recessed fixtures, and are easily installed with a twist and snap as a result of their simple, clever design. Unsightly CFLs are replaced by decorator-quality appeal with this resin product priced from about $4.00 for a single unit to about $10.50 for a three pack.

During routine installation of CFLs in his own home, Mr. East was struck by the image of his new lighting: what had once been lovely was now simply unattractive. In his effort to step up his energy consciousness, East felt he had stepped down in terms of aesthetics. His search for a suitable cover resulted in no reasonable alternatives, so the engineer in him took over. Applying what he’d learned twenty-five years earlier as an engineering major at Cal State Fresno, he designed a two-piece unit that includes a snap base and a decorative cover designed to fit over most CFLs. The product is extremely user-friendly – just twist and snap, and eco-friendly as well, manufactured using high temperature resins and packaged in recycled materials. The high-quality resin covers not only look great, but they also render the CFLs safer by protecting them with a shatterproof cover.

But it’s the East’s unique passion that gives this organization a real twist: their belief that young people with disabilities can be productive members of society, and effective workers in the right setting. They aim to make Twist’N LLC exactly that setting. The Easts have extensive experience working with young folks with a variety of challenges, both professionally in Tom’s work as a special educator, and personally, with their now-thriving autistic son, Clayton. It was in helping shape their son’s future that the Easts became frustrated by the job options available to young adults with disabilities including autism and Downs Syndrome. With very few meaningful outlets available to them, they decided to make it a joint mission.

The shipping aspect of Twist’N is a perfect application for these individuals, where routine and repetition are at the crux of the effort, and, coincidentally, form the basis for a safe and successful working environment. It is a fledgling effort for this upstart at present, but the Easts eventually hope to parlay this into a much bigger deal by forming alliances with local schools to provide in-school training to help these young people gain the skills they need to become team members for him, and for other like-minded organizations.

With their melding of philanthropy and environmental and aesthetic sensibilities, Tom and Renee East have laid the foundation for a true 21st century endeavor – one that will brighten the lives of many, in so many ways.
