Bears Youth Basketball teaching Jason Kidd style Basketball.

Oct. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Bears Youth Basketball is doing something different when it comes to youth basketball.  "We are helping young people not only become great athletes but great scholar athletes", says Shawn Granberry, Director of Bears Youth Basketball.  Starting in 4th grade BYB requires that youth attend at least three college visits per year with at least one parent set up by the program.  This year the 11 and under boys basketball team will be visiting Stanford University, UC Berkeley and St. Mary's College.  Also if players play four consecutive years in the program, BYB will help the player"s family make sure their is funding for a college education.  "Our goal is to make sure youth have the opportunity to attend college with out barriers.  By the time a youth has played in our program for four years or more they will have attended 16 to 20 college visits.  Now that is powerful!", says Granberry.

Bears Youth Basketball teaches a Jason Kidd style of basketball;  defense, court vision, team ball (passing), floor leadership, pure position and knowledge of the game.  "I grew up with Jason Kidd and had to guard him at recess on the St. Paschal's school courts everyday as youth.  I watched him develop into one of the greatest basketball players this world has ever seen" says Granberry.  "Both Jason and myself were provided a wonderful environment as youth in East Oakland by our parents, teachers and coaches, now it is time to give back so young people today can have a similar experience" says Granberry. "Basketball can be used as a tool to help young people develop life skills to become wonderful adults, that is what our program is all about" says Coach Allison of Bears Youth Basketball.  

Bears Youth Basketball is making a difference by focusing on scholastic achievement as well as athletic performance.  "We may not see another Jason Kidd but we will do our part to help young people grow into wonderful, productive, loving adults" says Granberry.  Great job!
