Oct. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- It would appear that Britons may have some travelling to do if they’re going to get around all of the places in the World they want to see in their lifetime, as a poll by one of the UK’s leading online independent travel agents has revealed the top ten sights people want to see before they die.

www.sunshine.co.uk carried out the poll as part of ongoing research into the holiday and travel habits of people around the UK. 1,489 adults from the UK took part in the poll and respondents were asked questions about their travel plans and aspirations for the future.

They were first asked to pick the sights around the world they would most like to see in their lifetime, from a list of possible answers. Respondents could pick more than one option and were also given the opportunity to select ‘other’ if that applied.

According to the poll, the top 10 sights people around the UK most want to see in their lifetime were as follows;

1. Egyptian Pyramids                      89%
2. Northern Lights                            77%
3. Taj Mahal                                        73%
4. Niagara Falls                                  68%
5. Statue of Liberty                          64%
6. Mount Rushmore                       56%
7. Grand Canyon                              42%
8. Great Barrier Reef                      37%
9. Venetian Canals                           28%
10. Big Ben                                          19%

Despite being given the option to pick anywhere in the World, 1 in 5 Britons stated that they wanted to see Big Ben in their lifetime.

Respondents were then asked, ‘Do you think you’ll get the opportunity to see any of the sights you want to get to in your lifetime?’ 54% were hopeful that they would.

Chris Brown, co-founder of sunshine.co.uk, commented on the findings:

“Whilst most people around the UK normally holiday every year, if not every other year, it’s rare that they venture outside of their comfort zones of beach or ski resorts and go further afield to see what else the world has to offer.

“It was no surprise to see sights like the Northern Lights and Gran Canyon in the top 10, but Big Ben was a bit of a mystery. London’s only a short train or car journey away for most people, so that’s a fair bit easier to see than taking a long flight to Australia to see the Great Barrier Reef! I think if people have aspirations to go and see some of these sights, they should save hard and take the chance when they get it; after all, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity!”
